USC Routs Washington, 17-6

May 16, 1999

LOS ANGELES - LOS ANGELES -- The 16th-ranked USC baseball team handed UW ace Jeff Heaverlo his worst outing the season, routing the Huskies 17-6, Sunday at Dedeaux Field in the final Pac-10 game of the season for both teams.

The Huskies fell to 32-21 overall and 12-12 in the conference with the loss. Second-place USC closed out its regular season with a 33-23 overall mark, 17-7 in the Pac-10.

Heaverlo (10-3) surrendered 13 hits and 12 earned runs to the defending national champions. He did, however, tie the UW career record for starts (40) and break the career mark for innings pitched (265.1). The biggest blows came in the second inning when USC scored six runs and got three consecutive home runs from Jason Lane, Eric Munson and Dominic Correa.

USC starter Rik Currier, who gave up eight hits and four earned runs in five and one-third innings, picked up the win to improve to 5-6.

Six different USC players -- Lane, Munson, Correa, Seth Davidson, Beau Craig and Justin Gemoll -- tallied three hits on the day. Lane, who doubled and homered led the team with four runs batted in. Husky right fielder Bryan Williamson went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Washingtons offense.

The Huskies close out the regular season next Thursday, Friday and Saturday against Washington State at Husky Ballpark. The three games are non-conference.
